Former cricketer Gautam Gambhir, who announced his retirement from all forms of cricket in December 2018, may be BJP’s candidate from New Delhi for 2019 elections as per a report by NDTV. As per the report, Gambhir may contest from the prestigious New Delhi constituency, currently held by the party’s Meenakshi Lekhi, in the national election in April-May.
Gambhir, who was part of the winning squad in 2007 T20 World Cup and 2011 World Cup, was recently awarded Padma Shri and has remained non-commital whenever asked about joining politics.
The former cricketer, who’s a resident of Rajinder Nagar, was a high profile campaigner for Union Minister Arun Jaitley when Jaitely contested from Amritsar in the 2014 elections.
Speaking about his thoughts on joining politics in an interview with The Quint in December 2018, Gambhir had said, “Honestly, I haven’t even thought about it.” He, however, had added, “If ever there is a situation in life that I get into that space, don’t vote for Gautam Gambhir the cricketer. Don’t vote for Gautam Gambhir the human either. Vote for Gautam Gambhir if you believe in him, that he can change your life for better, and can try to make this country a better place to live in.”
