While virtually addressing at the ‘Bhoomi Poojan’ of Ahmedabad Metro Rail Project Phase II and Surat Metro Rail Project on Monday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi slammed former Congress-led United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government saying that the previous government had no modern approach and policy for metro.
“Works on projects worth Rs 17,000 crore is starting from today. This shows that the country’s efforts for new infrastructure projects is increasing during COVID-19. Ahmedabad and Surat are cities that will empower self-reliant India,” PM Modi said.
“Ahmedabad and Surat are cities receiving very important gifts today. Metro will further strengthen the connectivity in two major business centres of the country-Ahmedabad and Surat.”
“Best example to see the difference between approach of previous governments and work of current government is the expansion of metro rail networks across the country,” he said.
“Before 2014, only 225 kilometres of metro line became operations in 10 to 12 years. In last six years, over 450 kilometres of metro network became operational.”
“Work in underway on over 1000 kilometres of metro network in 27 cities across the nation, as of now. There was a time when there was no modern thinking in nation, regarding metro network, there was no metro policy. As a result, there were different kinds of metro in different cities,” PM Modi added.
