Nagpur Joint Commissioner of Police Ravindra Kadam on Monday said that Section 144 has been imposed in the city till March 31st to combat Coronavirus. Section 144 of the Criminal Procedure Code (CrPC) authorises the Executive Magistrate of any state or territory to issue an order to prohibit the assembly of four or more people in an area.

However, as per Section 144, five or more people can't move together in groups. Ravindra Kadam told Nation Next, “To combat Coronavirus, we’ve decided to impose Section 144 in Nagpur. Not more than five people can move together in public areas in the city. We are basically restricting people to avoid attending large gatherings, events or religious places. However, if due permission is taken for a specific cause, we can still consider but otherwise large gathering is not allowed.”

Whoever flouts the rule would be penalised under IPC 188 (disobedience to order duly promulgated by a public servant) that includes more than one-month jail along with fine.
