Amid the 21-day-lockdown imposed by PM Narendra Modi across India to curb the spread of coronavirus, a couple from Raipur in named their new-born twins as ‘Covid’ and ‘Corona.’ The twins were born in Dr BR Ambedkar Memorial Hospital.

Preeti Verma, the 27-year-old mother, who gave birth to the twins said, “I was blessed with the twins; a boy and a girl, in the early hours on March 27. We have named the boy ‘Covid’ and the girl ‘Corona’. Because of the 21-day-lockdown, the delivery happened after facing lot of difficulties and therefore, I and my husband decided with these named.”

On March 26, Preeti started experiencing severe labour pain and somehow her husband successfully managed to arrange an ambulance operated under 102 Mahtari Express service. They were stopped by police several times due to the lockdown, but fortunately the doctors and staff were cooperative. “Within 45 minutes of their arrival, the delivery was done successfully and the couple gave birth to healthy twins,” Public Relations Officer (PRO), Subhra Singh informed.

Speaking about their unusual decision, Preeti said, “The virus is dangerous and life-threatening but its outbreak made people focus on sanitation, hygiene and aware about other good habits. Hence, we thought that we should name our kids as ‘Covid’ and ‘Corona.”

However, the couple said that their decision of naming their kids may change and they may give the twins different names later.
