Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Monday announced that women in Delhi will soon be able to travel for free in Delhi Metro, Delhi Transport Corporation buses and cluster buses. Kejriwal said that the move will enable women to have a safe travel experience and will give them a chance to access modes of transport, which they were not able to, due to high prices.
Informing about the new policy Kejriwal said, “I have given one week’s time to officials to make a detailed proposal for metro and DTC as to how and when this decision can be implemented. We are making an effort to implement this decision within the next two to three months. We are also seeking suggestions from the people regarding implementation.”
Kejriwal also mentioned that those who can afford to buy tickets are free to buy them. He said, “Subsidy won’t be imposed on anyone. There are several women who can afford these modes of transport. Those who can afford can buy tickets. They need not take the subsidy. We encourage those who can afford to buy tickets and not take subsidy so that others can benefit.”
Making it clear that his government's decision does not need an approval from Centre, Kejriwal said, “When we asked the Centre not to increase prices of tickets, they didn’t agree. We then told them that Delhi Government has a 50% representation on the issue and hence Delhi Government and Centre should equally share the burden of subsidy on raised prices. They didn’t agree to this as well. Delhi Government will bear the entire fare with respect to this decision. We don’t need to take approval for this.”
Meanwhile Delhi BJP chief Manoj Tiwari has lashed out at Kejriwal for the decision. Tiwari said, “He (Arvind Kejriwal) promised to deploy Marshals for safety and panic buttons in buses. It seems he himself is now panicking. He can’t understand what new tactic he should use to mislead the people of Delhi.”
