Acting on a tip-off by an intelligence input, the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) had earlier seized nearly 3000 kg of heroin drug imported from Afghanistan.
The drugs were seized at Mundra Port, based in Kutch district of coastal Gujarat, controlled by businessman Gautam Adani.
DRI sources told CNN News18, “Two consignments of heroin, a banned narcotic substance, were seized on September 15. An initial investigation estimated its street value at ₹3,500 crore. Six days later, it was found to be worth around ₹20,000 crore.”
As per DRI, a Vijaywada-based firm Aashi Trading Company from Bandar Abbas Port in Iran had reportedly shipped the consignments to Gujarat.
While one of the seized consignments was loaded with 1,999.58 kg of heroin, another contained 988.64 kg of the same.
Experts from Forensics Science Lab (FSL) in Gandhinagar, upon examination, confirmed that the substance in the consignment was heroin.
DRI arrested a Chennai-based couple Govindaraju Durgapurn Vaishali and Machhavaram Sudhakar who has been accused of importing the consignments through Aashi Trading Company by claiming it to be ‘talcum powder.’ The court has sent the couple to a 10-day judicial custody in Bhuj.
Sources in DRI told CNN News 18 DRI that three more accused have been arrested in Mumbai, out of which two were Afghan nationals.
Sources added that Hasan Hussain Ltd, an entity based in Afghanistan’s Kandahar, had first shipped the heroin to Bandar Abbas Port.
As per United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime, Afghanistan is one of the biggest exporters of narcotic drugs, and it accounts for nearly 85% of worldwide heroin supplies.
