Justice BV Nagarathna
Justice BV Nagarathna, who's currently a judge in the Karnataka High Court, could become India's first ever woman Chief Justice in the year 2027. She is one of the nine judges who names have been recommended elevation to the Supreme Court by a collegium led by CJI NV Ramana. Justice Nagarathna is likely to have a month-long tenure.
The recommendation also includes two other women: Justice Hima Kohli of the Telangana High Court and Justice Bela Trivedi of the Gujarat High Court. Other recommendations include: Karnataka High Court chief justice Abhay Kumar Oka, Gujarat High Court chief justice Vikram Nath, Sikkim High Court chief justice JK Maheshwari, Justice CT Ravikumar, the 2nd senior-most judge of the Kerala High Court, Justice M M Sundar, the 3rd senior most-judge of Madras High Court and former Additional Solicitor General and senior advocate PS Narsimha.
If Justice BV Nagarathna indeed becomes the Chief Justice, she will not only be creating history but will also follow in the footsteps of her father ES Venkataramiah, who was the Chief Justice of India between June 1989 and December 1989.
