A MCOCA accused lodged at Nagpur Central Jail, who is awaiting trial, tried to commit suicide on Tuesday (June 8). The inmate - Roshan Kayyum Sheikh (31), a resident of P and T Colony, Katol Road, Nagpur, was booked last year under Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA). He was arrested by city's Ambazari Polcie on charges of extortion.
As per the police, at around 2:15 pm on Tuesday, Sheikh tried to kill himself by hanging from the window rod with an elastic strap from his innerwear in a high security cell. As soon as jail guards realised what Sheikh was up to, they along with constable Paresh Bute quickly removed the noose from around his neck.
On April 25, 2021, Sheikh was beaten up by four inmates of the jail. Jatin aka Jay Yogesh Jangam (18), Jerom aka Bunty George Nicholas (22), Arnold aka Sheltin Christopher (19) and Vishal Naryan Mohrale (19) had thrashed Sheikh resulting in Sheikh sustaining injuries to his hands, legs and back.
Following the attack, Sheikh was taken to GMCH for treatment. After he got discharged, he was shifted to the high security cell.
