Congress leader Nana Patole, on Thursday afternoon, resigned as the Speaker of Maharashtra State Assembly.
By submitting his resignation, Patole further substantiated the rumours of becoming the President of Congress in Maharashtra.
If certain reports were to be believed, his name as the Congress Chief of Maharashtra was reportedly finalised by Congress’ top leadership.
On Wednesday, Patole met Congress’ top leadership in Delhi and repeatedly discussed matters regarding his new role.
Patole returned to Mumbai on Thursday morning and resigned as the Speaker of Vidhan Sabha because as per the rules, the speaker cannot hold any other political position, until he or she leaves the chair.
Some senior leaders were said to have spoken with Chief Minister of Maharashtra Uddhav Thackeray and NCP Supremo Sharad Pawar on Patole’s appointment as party chief. The congress would soon an official statement regarding the same.
Patole started out as a Congressman but switched paths and was elected as a BJP MP in 2014 from Bhandara constituency.
Later on, he returned to Congress and was elected as an MLA in 2019, following which he was made the Speaker of the Maharashtra Assembly.
