Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, on Friday, said that the fuels like petrol and diesel were not included under the Goods and Service Tax (GST) as of now.
She said that the GST Council, which currently has finance ministers of every state as members, decided not to include petrol and diesel under GST.
The Kerala High Court earlier while listening to a writ petition had asked the GST Council to consider including petrol and diesel under GST.
On Friday, Sitharaman chaired a high-level meeting with the GST Council in Lucknow. It was the 45th GST Council meeting and was conducted in an offline manner for the first time since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic in March 2020.
While addressing a press conference after the meeting, she said, “GST Council today discussed the issue of bringing petrol and diesel under the GST as per the Kerala HC order. However, it decided that it was not the right time for it.”
“GST rate on bio-diesel for blending in diesel was reduced to 5% from 12%, while the national permit fee for goods carriage has been exempt from GST,” she opined.
Along with this, states also opposed any plan for bringing petrol and diesel under GST.
