Former chief minister of Maharashtra Prithviraj Chavan said that Rahul Gandhi, who’s soon going to become Congress chief, is now a changed man.

Chavan, while addressing the media persons, said, “Inducting Rahul Gandhi as party chief was not an easy choice. Not all Congress leaders were sure that the move would pay off. Chavan, clearing stating that a change in leadership was on cards, said that it (change in leadership) had to happen now or before the general elections.

“Rahul Gandhi, despite repeated requests, had refused the position of party chief. Now, he’s a changed man. His body language too has changed. Inducting him as the party president was done with a lot of contemplation. It was a difficult choice,” said the senior Congress leader.

Chavan, referring to Sonia Gandhi, said that earlier as well, the Congress had experienced a situation, in which a person not from the Gandhi family had managed everything. As per a quote in Pune Mirror, Chavan was quoted as saying, “After gauging the current situation, Rahul Gandhi’s name turned out to be the only choice. A leader who would keep the north-south balance was required. Now, we cannot be sure if he will be successful, and the result of the upcoming polls in Gujarat will be a huge factor in deciding this. Nevertheless, a choice has been made and the process will be completed soon.”

Chavan even clarified that the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) and Congress would be contesting the 2019 general elections in an alliance.
