Even though Maharashtra government had claimed that majority of the COVID-19-infected patients in the state had contracted Delta variant, it has now been learnt that Omicron variant (B.1.1.529) was found in all the 73 SARS-Cov-2 samples that were considered randomly by CSIR-NEERI’s environmental virology cell in Nagpur between January 7 to 10.

Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) had provided all the samples that were collected randomly from different parts of the city, on which whole genome sequencing was conducted.
During the earlier study, NEERI had detected Omicron in 96% of the samples that were collected between January 1 to 6.
