Just after Twitter suspended Abhijeet Bhattacharya’s account on Tuesday, post his derogatory remarks against Shehla Rashid, a JNU activist, singer Sonu Nigam decided to quit Twitter, bidding goodbye to his close to 7 million followers. Sonu quit the micro-blogging site citing lack of respect for freedom of speech and in defiance of the ‘one sided sham’ on Twitter.
Sonu Nigam posted 24 tweets explaining his reason behind quitting Twitter. In these 24 tweets, he questioned as to how a woman can endorse Gautam Gambhir's picture in front of jeep but Paresh Rawal is criticed for doing the same to someone (Arundhati Roy) else. He also questioned as to how Shehla Rashid’s accusation of BJP running a sex racket is well taken but Abhijeet Bhattacharya statement made Twitter to suspend his account. Sonu also poined out that everybody on twitter is ‘angry’ and there’s no scope of a sensible discussion. Writing about which side he’s on, Sonu expressed that he has no religion and is neither a left wing nor a right wing supporter.
Shehla Rashid, in the past, made allegations of sex trafficking against some BJP leaders tweeting, “From Gujarat to Bengal to Madhya Pradesh, BJP leaders run sex rackets, child trafficking gangs & spy for ISI.” Abhijeet replied by tweeting: “There is a rumour she took money in advance for 2 hrs and didn't satisfy the client..big racket.” Abhijeet’s account was suspended after this.
