Sushil Kumar Shinde

As Congress chief Rahul Gandhi continues to be adamant on not willing to withdraw his resignation, media reports hint at replacing him with Sushil Kumar Shinde as party president.

Former chief minister of Maharashtra, Shinde, 77, who was also the Union Home Minister from 2012 to 2014, is known to be a staunch Gandhi family loyalist.

Reportedly, Shinde had emerged as the front-runner for the post among leaders including Ghulam Nabi Azad, Mukul Wasnik, Mallikarjun Kharge, etc.

A political career spanning over four decades, Shinde’s appointment as the party president would assume great significance in the upcoming Maharashtra Assembly elections mostly due in September.

Shinde lost the Solapur Lok Sabha seat in 2019 against Bharatiya Janata Party's Siddheshwar Shivacharya Swami.
