Vidarbha Economic Development Council, on May 4, wrote a letter to Union Minister Nitin Gadkari, Maharashtra CM Uddhav Thackeray, Cabinet Minister Anil Deshmukh and NMC Commissioner Tukaram Mundhe demanding roll back of NMC’s decision to continue lockdown in the city without any relaxations.

The letter read: “Nagpur has been successful in confining the spread of pandemic and only two of the Legislative Assembly Constituencies are badly impacted. Considering the low number of positive cases, it is shocking that the Nagpur Municipal Commissioner Tukaram Mundhe overruled the Government of Maharashtra orders and extended the lockdown till May 17 without any relaxations via order no. MC/65/2020.

The council further added, “Livelihood is as critical as the lives of the people. Small businesses, traders and professionals are worst hit by the lockdown measures. The weaker sections of the city are staring at an existential crisis. Calibrated approach to ease livelihood amidst lockdown is a welcome move and needs to be implemented in letter and spirit in the city of Nagpur.”
